With the 996 Turbo and 997 Turbo models selling for 2-3x of the normally aspirated model, we are seeing more interest in finding ways to get Turbo levels of power out of a normally aspirated 996 or 997.

Before considering a “power-adder” such as the VF Engineering Supercharger, Riegel ensures your M96 or M97 Porsche engine is up to the task with a thorough inspection and history check on the health of your engine. Some of the key areas, but not limited, are:
- Bore-scope inspection of the cylinders, ensuring no bore-scoring is present
- Ensure service records confirm the IMS (intermediate shaft bearing) has been replaced with a quality replacement in the past 5 years or 50,000 km’s
- Inspect for Oil Leaks, including RMS (rear main seal) and IMS area
- Depending on mileage, leak down and/or compression check may be required
- Consider a performance engine rebuild with or without displacement increase. Example: 3.8 “M96” engine with Mahle Motorsports pistons, coated bearings, increased capacity oil pan with X51 style baffle

Minimal Downtime for Installation
The VF-Engineering kit includes a billet supercharger mounting bracket designed with CAD software and machined from 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum . It is a perfect fit. The bracket utilizes the OEM bolt holes and requires no alteration or relocation of any engine parts to be fitted. The design of the supercharger bracket positions the belt-driven supercharger to maintain use of the OEM spring loaded belt tensioner. The serpentine belt routing was designed to maintain the correct rotation of all the accessories and maintain optimal pulley wrap for maximum friction.
A V3 model “Si-Trim” supercharger from Vortech Engineering was chosen after consultation with Vortech engineers and matching the engine’s volumetric efficiency with supercharger compressor maps. The V3 unit contains helical-cut gears ensuring queit performance – virtually silent with the engine compartment lid closed. The V3 supercharger has a 20psi and 1000cfm maximum capacity and is an over-engineered part for this Porsche application which is geared to produce a conservative 6psi in the engine’s intake manifold.
The Vortech air to water intercooler is included with the supercharger kit and ensures consistent and cool air is force fed into the engine. VF-Engineering integrates a Porsche OEM front radiator and front bumper vents into the kit. Water is circulated by means of an added OEM Bosch water pump through OEM Goodyear water lines. During testing in the Arizona desert at ambient temperatures of 118 deg F, intake air temperatures were measured to be approx 140 deg F, even with ‘spirited’ driving. This dramatic drop in charge temperature helps create consistent power.
