The Porsche Cayenne models commonly exhibit problems related to torn crankcase ventilation diaphragms or membranes, which are located on top of the valve cover.
Over time, the diaphragm membrane wears out and tears. Often times the tear will cause a pressure imbalance between the membrane and the crankcase, which trips the mass air flow sensor.
As a result, the engine can be difficult to start, may cause a rough idle or could cause cylinder misfires. The longer you leave it, the more wear you’re putting on the engine. As you can imagine, dust and contaminated air can get through the membrane and can start affecting the engine’s internal components living within the crankcase.
If you think your Porsche Cayenne has a torn crankcase membrane, pay attention to the sound your engine makes. If a whistling sound can be heard upon start-up or idle, you’ll want to check the engine bay to see if the sound is coming from the top of the engine, where the crankcase is found.
Symptoms to look out for: rough start, engine misfires, increased oil consumption and a steady whistling sound.
